God is… Sovereign – Part 5

The perfection of God we’re going to look at this week, like all the others we’ve studied, is certainly important, but it is also hotly debated. God is…SOVEREIGN. Whether or not God is actually SOVEREIGN is not argued – all mainstream Christians agree that *God is preeminent in wisdom, power and authority. What’s subject to disagreement is to what extent God applies His sovereignty – specifically, how much control He exerts over the wills of men and women. When we speak of the sovereignty of God, we mean He rules the universe, but then the debate begins over when and where His control is direct and when it is indirect. In seeing what God's Word has to say, I’m not going to take you on a cursory tour of the Old and New Testaments like I have with some of the other perfections. I’m also not going to take you to passages that have led to endless heated and unfruitful debates about the extent of God’s control over the wills of men and women. Instead, I’m going to take you to a single event recorded by all four gospel writers. It’s the kind of event, that if you didn’t know the eventual outcome, it might well have caused you to scratch you head and wonder to yourself exactly what God was doing and what He was trying to accomplish.
