Encounters with Jesus – The crucifixion
Six hours one Friday.
Just six hours, from 9 am to 3 pm to contain what Christians around the world esteem as the greatest event in the history of the world. Let me ask you a question: What do you do with that day in history? What do you do with its claims? If it really happened…if God did commandeer His own crucifixion and poured out His divine wrath on His Son? In the passage before us this morning we come across a number of people that were eye-witnesses of the events that transpired that day. In that jam-packed 6 hours they had the opportunity to experience the sounds, sights, and the emotions surrounding the crucifixion firsthand. In fact, each of them had a personal encounter with Jesus, just before He was nailed to the cross, or as He hung on the cross dying. You don’t have that opportunity today. Not that anyone in their right mind would take the opportunity if they did. But, to some extent you have the chance to relive it through the testimony of the Gospel of Mark.
