The Jordan River flows into the Sea of Galilee and then out the other side, but it only flows into the Dead Sea. Some have noted that the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea have spiritual parallels in the church. When a church is only concerned with what’s coming into it and has no passion to ever give anything back then over time that church will invariably die. We don’t want our church to be a church like the Dead Sea, do we? We want it to be a church (and remember you are the church) that’s teeming with life; a church that not only takes but gives back; a church that has outlets that pour into the marketplace, community, and world – the places where we are needed most. We dare not become so inward focused, so comfortable and safe, so saturated with salt that we don’t care about what’s going on around us, and slowly but surely begin to take on the characteristics of the Dead Sea.
